Neck Dress Cowl

The key to my collections is sensuality. You're only as good as your last collection, which is an enormous pressure. War taught me that not everything is glamorous. My shows are about the complete woman who swallows it all. It's a question of survival. Men don't want another man to look at their woman because they don't know how to handle it.

Grunge is a hippied romantic version of punk. You can't just buy things for the label – it's ridiculous. I couldn't love a woman who inspired me to be totally disinterested. If I fell in love with a woman for an artistic reason, or from the point of view of my work, I think it would rob her of something. I don't care about money. I really don't care. I just want to do what I do. We must never confuse elegance with snobbery.

Description

Design is a series of creative choices – it’s a collaborative effort, an evolutionary process. You choose your fabrics depending upon what you want to say, then you work with mills to get those fabrics. Through the process, you realize what you want it to be. I like to be real. I don’t like things to be staged or fussy. I don’t really know how to do casual clothes. Success isn’t about the end result, it’s about what you learn along the way. Money doesn’t buy elegance. You can take an inexpensive sheath, add a pretty scarf, gray shoes, and a wonderful bag, and it will always be elegant.

I don’t care about money. I really don’t care. I just want to do what I do. When I was young, I lived like an old woman, and when I got old, I had to live like a young person. I’m a fashion designer and people think, what do I know? I try as much as possible to give you a great basic product and what comes out, I feel, is really amazing. I was the first person to have a punk rock hairstyle.

I love you if you love me. I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes. Those fashion designers are just crazy; but aren't we all? I'd like to believe that the women who wear my clothes are not dressing for other people, that they're wearing what they like and what suits them. It's not a status thing. You can hide so much behind theatrics, and I don't need to do that any more.
