Fashion is always of the time in which you live. It is not something standing alone. But the grand problem, the most important problem, is to rejeuvenate women. To make women look young. Then their outlook changes. They feel more joyous. Never in my wildest dreams did I entertain the idea that I would become a fashion designer. I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes. There is always an emotional element to anything that you make. I want to thank all the women who have worn my clothes, the famous and the unknown, who have been so faithful to me and given me so much joy.
I have an obsession with details and pattern. I want people to be afraid of the women I dress. I always say: To be well dressed you must be well naked. Don’t dress to kill, dress to survive. An evening dress that reveals a woman’s ankles while walking is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen.
The only way to do something in depth is to work hard. The market is like a language, and you have to be able to understand what they’re saying. You have to stay true to your heritage; that’s what your brand is about. My relationships with producers or photographers – these are relationships that took years. I love the 2000s because everyone started to love haute couture.
